What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
Modern-day sisters discover deadly ancient magic in book 1 of
this Falling Kingdoms spin-off series!
Worlds collide in this suspenseful,
page-turning Falling Kingdoms spin-off series, which explores a whole new side
of Mytica—and an even darker version of its magic.
Crystal Hatcher, Modern-day Toronto: It’s a normal afternoon in her mother’s antique
bookshop when Crys witnesses the unthinkable: her little sister Becca collapses
into a coma after becoming mesmerized by a mysterious book written in an
unrecognizable language.
Maddox Corso, Ancient Mytica: Maddox Corso doesn’t think much of it when he
spots an unfamiliar girl in his small village. Until, that is, he realizes that
she is a spirit, and he is the only one who can see or hear her. Her name is
Becca Hatcher, and she needs Maddox to help get her home.
Farrell Grayson, Modern-day Toronto: Rich and aimless Farrell Grayson is thrilled
when the mysterious leader of the ultra-secret Hawkspear Society invites him
into the fold. But when he learns exactly what he has to do to prove himself,
Farrell starts to question everything he thought he knew about family, loyalty,
and himself….
Fate has brought these young people together,
but ancient magic threatens to rip them apart.

My thoughts:
So I really really love the falling kingdom series! So I just knew I had to read this series as well, but I have no idea why it took me this long to finally pick it up.
I only found out when I finished this book that the release of third book is cancelled or indefinitely delayed. So now I’m not so sure if I’m happy I read this, since most probably I will never read the ending.. And I’m not even sure if I want to read the second book because of that..
But now for the actual review. I never actually read the back of this book before reading it, so I was quite surprised to find out that this mostly takes place in modern-day Toronto! I really liked that we still got one perspective from Ancient Mytica, since I really like that world!
I enjoyed the characters, they were interesting but I can’t say I necessarily liked them. Both Crystal and Farrell did some questionable things during the book. But I did really like Maddox and Becca (side character)!
But that was not all that bad. My main problem for this book came from the plot. The first 75% were actually quite boring. In the beginning I didn’t mind that much, since we were getting introduced to the world. But at some point I just started to wait for the story to pick up. The ending definitely had some action and I really enjoyed that, and it definitely bumped up my rating!
Since there was quite some action in the end, I expect the sequel to be better! But as I mentioned in the beginning I’m not sure if I want to pick that one up!
