What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
After battling the impossible, Zélie
and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha.
But the ritual was more powerful than they could’ve imagined, reigniting the
powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too.
Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an
Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy
and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure
Amari’s right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy’s wrath.
With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie
finds herself at a breaking point: she must discover a way to bring the kingdom
together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart.

My thoughts:
I was so excited for this book! I absolutely loved book one when I read it shortly after its release.
And this book was just.. disappointing..
I’m now doubting if I actually really loved book one as much as I remember or if it is just because of the hype surrounding Children of blood and bone.
I don’t want to say that this is a bad book, because it is not! It was just really underwhelming. First of all it was quite a bit shorter compared to book one. And all the action scenes felt a bit short or easy.
Now for the things I did like, I absolutely loved the writing! It just reads so easily and I flew through the book! I also enjoyed the characters more compared to book one, even though Zélie and Amari changed their minds quite often and sometimes without reason!
I really liked that we got to learn way more about the magic system in this book! And I definitely hope to see even more from it in the last book!
But the main reason I didn’t rate this book higher is that I really disliked the last chapter and the epilogue! The story could have been over kinda, and then something random happened so that there would eb a story for book three?! At least that is how it felt to me!
I will still definitely read the last book. I also definitely recommend reading this series, the writing is amazing and the covers are gorgeous!
Sorry this one was a bit disappointing for you!
Yeah, guess it happens..
It’s a shame when a first book was really great and the second doesn’t quite meet the same standard. It’s hard not to build up too much hype while waiting for sequels though… I’m glad this was mostly good in the end! Jen
It is! Especially since I loved the first book so much ahah!
Thanks 🙂
That’s so sad Evelyn.. I know how excited you were for this one… I hope you read another highly anticipated book soon and love it a lot
Yeah I really was!
Thanks!
I thought the first one was okay, but you might be on to something about the hype – looking back now, I hardly remember anything that happened in it, and so even though I liked it, I guess it didn’t make much of an impression? If you thought this was disappointing, I’d probably feel much the same way. I’ll likely pass on this, there are more interesting YA these days I should get to first. Thanks for your review!
Tbh I don’t think you will miss much.. There are indeed so many other books, which we probably will love way more!
I’ve heard some not so great things about the author that have slightly put me off reading this series. The other is the lukewarm reception to the books themselves. I’ll have to keep passing these ones up. Thanks for the review!
I feel like book one was very hyped, but this second book isn’t getting the same hype..
It feels good I’m not the only one though..!
It seems like this sort of seems to be the consensus among a lot of people I know who have read this already. Our library just got it in, and side-eyed it for a minute and decided to pass, because I wasn’t all that enamored with the first one, and even people who loved the first seem lukewarm about the sequel.
It’s a shame about the ending, though. A poor ending can really kill the rest of an otherwise good book. Great review!
I absolutely loved book one, so if you already didn’t love the first one, I’m not sure if you would like this one.
Yeah poor endings are the worst!
I’ve seen three reviews for this book today – one a five star and two others from reviewers who were a bit disappointed. It took me a while to get around to reading the first one, so I’m hoping it won’t take quite as long to get to this one. Happy Reading, Evelyn!
Ooh that is interesting haah!
I hope you will enjoy it more then I did!
