What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
Impossible love between two girls —one human, one Made.
A love that could birth a revolution.
After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, Designed to be the playthings of royals, took over the estates of their owners and bent the human race to their will.
Now, Ayla, a human servant rising the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging the death of her family… by killing the Sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier. Crier, who was Made to be beautiful, to be flawless. And to take over the work of her father.
Crier had been preparing to do just that—to inherit her father’s rule over the land. But that was before she was betrothed to Scyre Kinok, who seems to have a thousand secrets. That was before she discovered her father isn’t as benevolent as she thought. That was before she met Ayla.
Set in a richly-imagined fantasy world, Nina Varela’s debut novel is a sweepingly romantic tale of love, loss and revenge, that challenges what it really means to be human.

My thoughts:
I’m so happy I decided to listen to this one! I’ve been struggling with connecting to audiobooks lately, but this one got me back into the audiobook mood!
This book was amazing! I basically loved every aspect of this book! The characters were great, the plot was amazing, the writing was so good, and I just wanted to continue to listen all the time!
This story is told from both Crier and Ayla’s perspective, and both their POVs were so interesting! Both characters have a very interesting background, and I loved learning about it. These backgrounds give them both some opinions about the world, and it was really good to see how these opinions developed throughout the book! Mainly because they spend time with each other. Besides, all the side characters were so good! I did not give this a 10 on CAWPILE, because I struggle giving 10’s..
I loved the setting of this book, the world was so interesting (what is another world for interesting, I keep saying that..). I loved the separation between the humans and the automae, and how they live together.
I really loved the plot for most of the book, I was so intrigued by it and I just could not put it down. The reason why the plot got a bit of a lower rating is that the ending felt a little bit too much. Maybe too much is not the right wording, but something we’ve seen often, even though the rest of the book felt quite original. I don’t want to say too much since it might be spoilery.
But until that point, like 90% into the story, I was loving every part of it! Normally I listen to my book while I go to work (10 minutes) but I decided not to with this book, because I would probably stand in front of my work to continue to listen haha!
There is also a romance in this book, that I really loved! And I really liked that this romance really was not the main plot of the book, it really was on the side. I’m pretty sure that we will see more of it in the sequel though!
As I already mentioned, I really loved Varela’s writing! I feel like it was smart to wait almost a year with listening to this, since now the sequel will release soon!
Great review! I’ve heard really good things about this one, so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Thanks! I hope you will too if you read it!
Great review! I’m looking forward to the sequel as well!
I hope we will both live it!
Ahhh, I’m glad you loved this one! Only yesterday I finished the second book and I love this series so much. I’m sad that it doesn’t get more recognition, it deserves a spotlight!
Ooh glad to hear you loved the sequel! I really hope to read that one soon as well!
