What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
I had a sister, once…
In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a
grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who
soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped
it all apart.
I promised her the throne would not come
between us.
Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan
who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a
shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to
find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their
ranks.
But it is a fact of life that one must kill
or be killed. Rule or be ruled.
Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs,
her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will
change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’
return and intends to destroy them once and for all.
Sometimes the title of queen is given.
Sometimes it must be taken.

My thoughts:
OMG I found another new favourite! I honestly could not love this more! I don’t know if I can write a good review for this, since I just loved every aspect of this book!
I loved the world! I really hope that in the physical copy there is a map, I would love to see that! (since I’m obviously planning to buy an actual copy of this book!) I would also really like it if we get to see more of the world in the next book!
Tbh I think the best part of the book were the phoenixes! It felt really original, and I really liked that they were quite present in this book! Sometimes with books that include dragons or something, they will be present for some small scenes, but here we actually got quite a bit, and I’m convinced we will get even more in the sequel! (based on the ending!)
Also the magic! I loved that they could ‘communicate’ with animals! There was more, but that was not that much used in this book, but again I’m convinced there will be more in the sequel! I would love to learn more about this other type of magic!
I liked all the characters! Be it main characters or side characters! They were all very well described, the main characters all developed in a good way, and I felt like I could understand all there decisions (or at least how they fit with the certain characters!).
And lastly, I just absolutely loved the story line! I just loved that Veronyka went on an ‘adventure’ on her own, and ended up with the riders. I really liked the kinda school setting here, and just everything!
Soo I just really loved this! I can’t wait for the sequel, and I definitely recommend the audiobook!
Ah I really enjoyed this story! I really want to continue this series 😀
I hope you will enjoy!
