What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
A century ago,
scientists theorised that a habitable planet existed in a nearby solar system.
Today, ten astronauts will leave a dying Earth to find it. Four are decorated
veterans of the 20th century’s space-race. And six are teenagers, graduates of
the exclusive Dalton Academy, who’ve been in training for this mission for most
of their lives.
It will take the team 23 years to reach Terra-Two. Twenty-three years spent in close quarters. Twenty-three years with no one to rely on but each other. Twenty-three years with no rescue possible, should something go wrong. And something always goes wrong.
I LOVED THIS! This book was so good!
I hyped this book up to myself so much, because the synopsis sounds so interesting, that I was a bit afraid I would be disappointed. But luckily I was not! I knew before I started reading this that it is a really character driven book. Which it is, but there is still quite some action! I wasn’t prepared for that and it pleasantly surprised me 🙂
We mainly follow the teenage graduates, and read from all their perspectives. The beginning of the book flies through their study years, and after approximately 75 pages the spaceship is launched. From their the pace slows down quite a bit, and we see how all these different individuals deal with being in space, living in such a small place with the same people every day. Besides this of course things happen in their space ship, which kept me on the edge of my seat!
The change in their environment and the things that happen in space really make the relationships between the characters chance a lot, and all of them have some great character development throughout the story!
I’m having such a hard time writing this review.. I loved this book so much, but I don’t know how to explain this haha. It also doesn’t help that I’m writing this review relatively late..
The only ‘bad’ thing I have to say about this book is that I was a little bit disappointed by the ending. I expected it to stop at a different point. But I won’t say more than this, since I don’t want to spoil the book!
If you enjoy sci-fi books that are more character-driven then plot-driven, but still with a bit of action, then definitely pick this one up. I guess in some way you could compare this with A long way to a small angry planet, it is quite different though, in the way that the character development is the most important part of the story!
