I bought the ebook of Girls of Paper and Fire shortly after it released, then I bought the second book after its release. So now that we were approaching the release of the third book I decided to go ahead and binge the series!
I was a bit confused about the release of the third book, so I read book one and two, and then had to wait a little bit of the third one, but luckily not too long, since, spoiler, I really liked them!
Definitely recommend this series for some sapphic fantasy, that reads quite quickly!

My thoughts:
Since I waited so long before picking this one up. And hadn´t heard much about the series recently, my expectations weren´t too high. But wow what was this good!
This story sucked my in right from the start. The first chapter made me so curious to the world and our main character Lei, I just could not stop reading!
Lei is from the Paper caste, the lowest caste that there is. She peacefully in a small town, until one day the royal guards come to her town to take her to the King. Since her golden eyes has piqued his interest. At the palace we meet the other Paper girls that the King has chosen.
Lei, the Paper girls, and the relation between them was so interesting to see develop, both in a friendship way but also jealousy! Especially the relation between Lei and Wren and Lei and Aoki! I just loved where this story was going, there were so many parts that I had not expected, but they still fitted the story so well! The plot intrigued me so much, that I just could not put it down and basically read the entire thing in 1,5 days!
This book was a bit darker in certain aspects then I had expected, so keep that in mind. But personally I enjoyed the darker twist of the book.
The writing was also great. This book just surprised me in every aspect! I was just very happy that I could pick up the sequel straight away, which I obviously did!

My thoughts:
This book takes off right where book one finished! So it was nice to read them back to back!
After the events at the ending of book one Lei and Wren escaped the Hidden Palace. From here on the story really becomes bigger and bigger. And I really enjoyed the exploration of the rest of the world.
Just like book one, this book is written from Lei’s POV, but we do get some (like 5) chapters from different POV’s, which really helps with seeing what happens in different parts of the world.
Still loved the characters, although I would have liked to see a bit more from certain side characters. The setting/atmosphere was still great, writing was still amazing!
I did rate this book a little bit lower on the plot and logic part (just by one point) because there were a couple of, small, things that I thought went a little bit too easy.
And again, this book had some dark parts in it, that quite got me by surprise, but in a good way!
I don’t know what else to say about this book, except that I cannot wait to read the third book!

My thoughts:
This was my least favourite in the series.. Still rated it 4 stars, just like the previous two, but if you look at my CAWPILE rating, it is a little bit lower. This lower rating is mainly coming from my lower rating on plot and logic. Some parts felt a bit chaotic to me. Also I wanted more of Lei and Wren together! Although I get why they weren’t at times!
Don’t get me wrong, I still flew through the story, since I really wanted to know what was going to happen, and mainly how they were going to achieve their goals.
I liked that we saw more from certain side characters like Nita (was this her name?!), Blue and Aoki!
I think my main reason for rating this one a little bit lower is the pacing of the story. It took like 100-150 pages for something to really happen. And especially the last 50 pages.. The story was kinda over and we got a really long ‘this is how everything is now’, which personally I didn’t need.
Don’t want to say more since it is the third book in the series!
Overall a good 4 star series! Definitely recommend! Looking forward to what Natasha Ngan will write next!
I didn’t love the first book when I read it, but this series review has me really considering giving it another try so I can continue the series!! Great review!
Thanks 🙂
If you pick it back up, I hope you love it!
I read the first one but didn’t like it enough to continue with the series, and then I was honestly surprised that the third book was just coming out this November because it seemed so long ago I read book one! (I guess it wasn’t actually that long considering the author needs time to finish writing the books and everything, but somehow I felt like no one was talking about this series anymore.)
Yeah I think there was quite some time between book 2 and 3!
I think you’re right it did lose quite some from its initial hype!
Glad you loved them! I’m planning on reading this series next year!
I hope you will love them as well! Definitely recommend binging them!
