So at the beginning of this year I challenged myself to read some books that won/were nominated for the Goodreads Choice Awards of 2019, to then decide my own winners! I wanted to go for all genres to see if there are unexplored genres (by me) out there that I will love!
At the beginning of this year I was really motivated to read all of the books that sounded interesting to me. But at some point I started to realize that I was reading quite some books that I did not like, since they were in genres that I do not enjoy reading. Which made me force myself to read certain books, which made me a bit slumpy. So the further we got into the year, the less I read the books from this list…
So now that the GoodReads Choice Awards of 2020 have been announced, I thought it would be time to wrap up my GoodReads Choice Awards 2019 reading!
Since I ended up reading quite some I decided to split my results into 3 different posts! So let’s start with part 1, and the first couple of categories!
I will first list all the books that I have read from certain categories, and then tell you my winner. I will probably not say much about each, since this will be long already! All reviews that I have will be linked!
Best fiction
Normal People by Sally Rooney (Read 2020) – 2 stars!
Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah (Read 2020) – 4 stars!
Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane (Read 2020) – 3.5 stars!
On Earth We´re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (read 2020) – DNF
GoodReads winner: The Testaments (I didn’t really understand The Handmaid’s Tale when I read it, so I did not want to read this..)
My winner: I would say Where the Forest Meets the Stars, but only because I rated it the highest.
Conclusion: Fiction is not for me.. This is one of the genres that made me slumpy..

Mystery & thriller
The Silent Patient by Alex Michealides (read 2020) – 4 stars!
My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite (Read 2019) – 4 stars!
The Turn of the Key by Ruth ware (read 2020) – 5 stars!
An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen (Read 2020) – 5 stars!

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim (Read 2019) – 4 stars!
GoodReads winner: The Silent Patient
My winner: The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware!
Conclusion: I think I found a new favourite genre?! Or not favourite but definitely up there, so in this case I’m happy I tried this experiment!

Historical fiction
Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Read 2019) – 5 stars!
The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead (Read 2020) – 2 stars!
GoodReads winner: Daisy Jones & the Six
My winner: Daisy Jones & the Six
Conclusion: A bit hard based on two books, but I would say historical fiction is also not really my thing (although I love Daisy Jones!)

Holy Sister by Mark Lawrence (Read 2020) – 3 stars!
GoodReads winner: Ninth House
My winner: Middlegame
Conclusion: Still my favourite genre, and damn choosing a winner was hard!

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (Read 2020) – 3 stars!
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (Read 2020) – 4.5 stars!
