What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.
A flying demon feeding on human energies.
A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.
And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.
The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.
She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

My thoughts:
This book really caught me by surprise! I totally forgot what this book was going to be about, I mean I had read the synopsis a while back, and knew I liked the sound of it. But by the time I picked it up, I had totally forgotten about it. I even forgot it was and King Arthur retelling, and that it took place in our world hahah.
I really liked out main character Bree, I loved learning about the world through her eyes. I mean she is kinda the standard female main character, that learns about this world and then saves them all. But I feel like it was really well done in this one. And she does go out to learn more, so her knowledge does not totally come out of nothing!
I also really liked Alice and William! They were definitely my favourite side characters. And Sel was for interesting, love to learn more about him in the sequel!
I always love school settings, so I was bound to love this one as well! I would have liked to actually see her go to school a little bit more often, to make it more believable. But then the book is already almost 600 pages without it haha!
The monsters and magic that Deonn created in this world were very interesting. Some of the monsters sounded really creepy haha. I really liked that not all parties knew everything, so we did learn about different types of magic through different groups of people. Which I think really added to the story.
There were quite some twists at the end that I definitely did not see coming! I can’t say much about it of course, but I really could not stop reading the last 100 pages of this book! I was thinking about rating this book 3.5 stars since it was going for a bit too long. But then the ending convinced me to give this one the full 4 stars!
This one definitely ended on a cliff-hanger, so I’m now very eagerly awaiting the sequel, which is hopefully coming later this year.
that’s a great review
Thanks

Great review Evelyn! I’m glad you enjoyed this one and completely agree about the ending! Bring on book two 😀
Right?!
Glad you liked it too!
This is one I really regret not requesting on NetGalley. Somehow I missed that it was a King Arthur retelling. Great review, Evelyn!
I also didn’t know until shortly before reading it!
I hope you will still read and love it!
