Let’s talk bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by Rukky @Eternity Books and Dani @Literary Lion, here different topics will be discussed.
This weeks topic is ‘Reading seasonally’, which I do not do haha! I read whatever I want whenever I want haha.
What makes a book a spring/summer/fall/winter read?
If I would read seasonally I would say that high fantasy books are more for fall/winter. While cute fluffy romances are more for summer. And maybe magical realism is more spring. But that is just based on the genres.
If the fluffy romance takes place during Christmas, maybe it is not the best to read during summer haha. I say that while I read 10 blind dates by Ashley Elston in summer haha!
As I said I do not really read seasonally, but if I would, I would probably split it based on genres, and not necessarily on the setting. I do not really mind reading a snowy book in summer, or beach book in winter haha!

Do holidays have to be included to feel seasonal?
Definitely not! I mean first of all holidays are not really the same for everyone, so not everyone relates to certain holidays (although it is always fun/interesting to read about holidays you are not familiar with). And second of all you can also describe the season without holidays haha! I mean if there is snow it will be pretty clear the book takes place in winter. Or if the character is wearing shorts, the book is probably taking place in summer etc.
Can a book still be ‘seasonal’ even if it takes place in multiple seasons?
Mm hard one, on the one side I would say no. But then to me adult high fantasies feel like wintery books, even though they sometimes take place over certain years.
So yes I do think books can be seasonal even though they take place over multiple seasons.
What are some examples of books you think are strongly rooted in a certain seasons for you?
As I already said before I do not read seasonally, I will just read whatever I want whenever I want. But there are still books that give vibes for certain seasons, even if I won’t necessarily read them in that season haha.
For me Harry Potter really feels like a fall/winter series, even though it takes place during a whole school year.
Anne of Green Gables really feels like a fall book, another one that definitely takes places during multiple seasons. Maybe because one of my favourite scenes is ‘I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers’.
I feel like most of my Sanderson books, The name of the wind, the eye of the world are perfect for a cold winter day. With a blanket, a fire place, and hot chocolate!
Spellbook of the Lost and Found and The Raven Boys give me Spring vibes!
I came up with these while staring at my bookshelves, and as you can see there are no books for summer.. That is because there are no fluffy romances on my shelves ahhaa! But to come up with a series I would say To all the boys I loved before, that would probably be fun in summer!
I don’t really care about seasonal reads. It’s hard to do it here because most books are set in the northern hemisphere, so Christmas IS in summer here (often 40ºC / 104ºF on Christmas Day), and we get snow in July.
The one book that I do read ‘seasonally’ is The Scorpio Races, but I usually read it in May / June, because that’s when the season tips over towards the cooler weather.
Haha yeah that makes sense!
I don’t usually read seasonally either except…I do have some halloween themed books lined up for October LOL. 🙂
Haha, i hope you will enjoy those!
I relate to this, cos I don’t exactly read seasonally, but I’m a mood reader and my mood’s are different depending on the season, so that can effect the genre for me too haha! I agree with you about high fantasy in winter! And I also agree about HP! Fun post!
Makes sense as well!
Seeing the comments and other posts, I think most people relate high fantasy to winter haha!
You’ve made some great points! I also agree that I gravitate towards fantasies during the winter time while fluffy romances are more for the summer. It’s just so much easier to bundle up inside with a thick fantasy book and lay out on the beach with a short, light romance!
Here’s my Let’s Talk Bookish post if you’d like to give it a look!
Exactly! Blanket, candles, tea, just give big fantasy vibes!
I actually agree with you that more fantastical books are fall and winter while fluffy contemporaries feel more summary. I wonder why that is?
I also tend not to read seasonally at all, I just read whatever catches my eye at the time. Harry Potter does feel more like a fall read, but honestly I’ll read it all year round.

I don;t know why that is haha, but it really feels logical!
I also read HP all year round! But it just gives me fall vibes!
Great points! I love reading seasonally but I can see how it isn’t for everyone. I agree with you that a book could feel seasonal even if the book’s events aren’t limited to just one season!
Exactly!
I don’t really read seasonally either. I’m definitely a mood reader, so it’s whatever pops into my mind at any given time!
Yeah just whatever I feel like!
Ahh this is a really great post! I admit I read seasonally, the weird thing is, where I live we don’t even have four seasons so my “seasonal” reading is really in sync with US-seasons instead of my own. I tend to go for contemporary and fantasy in summer and atmospheric book for the second half of the year. I don’t even know why haha but again, I guess it’s affected with how US-centric the internet is and I just got carried away…
Hahah, out of curiousity, where are you from?
I mean it makes sense to read similar as others on the internet!
Ah magical realism at spring is a good call! I could not think of what a spring book would be. I read seasonally, but the spring definitely doesn’t influence my reading.
Hahah I had to think about it for quite a while!
