Let’s talk bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by Rukky @Eternity Books , here different topics will be discussed.
This week’s topic is ‘should we read more serious books?’
The short answer: No, you should read what ever you want! If the only thing you want to read is YA fantasy, then go ahead!
I do think it is important to read about certain topics to learn more about things we don’t know much about! But you should only do that if you want to of course!
I mainly read SFF books, and a have a great time doing that. But I have made it a goal this year, and last year to read more non-fiction. My goal is to read 5 non-fiction books, which compared to the total amount of bokos I read in a year is not that much. The reason why I made this goal is because I want to educate myself more on topics that I feel like I don’t know much about.
This goal is not to force myself to read non-fiction even though I don’t want to. Because I do want to read them, I just don’t gravitate towards them quickly. And since I made this a goal in the beginning of the year I want to be able to cross it off at the end of the year haha!
In case you want to know, so far this year I’ve read two, and at the moment of writing this I’m in the middle of a third one, so things are going great.
I do count biographies etc as non-fiction books as well! No idea if that is how you’re supposed to categorize them, but whatever!
Back in March I did a Top Ten Tuesday post about non-fiction books that I want to read, it will be linked here!
Some that I recommend:
- Becoming by Michelle Obama
- Dear girls by Ali Wong
- Know my name by Chanel Miller
- The five by Hallie Rubenhold

I now realize these are all biographies haha! But I hope you will like them if you read them!
I’ve never heard of The Five but it looks super interesting – I just might have to pick it up. I’m also of the opinion that you should read what you want. You don’t have to use reading to better yourself, sometimes and activity can just be fun.
My favourite non-fictions are A Mother’s Reckoning by Sue Klebold and You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day. They’re extremely different. One is a tragic portrait of what it’s like to be the mother of a teen mass murderer. The other is a hilarious autobiography about what it’s like to be a girl in geekdom.
It really was! You really get to see how life was back then, and how they just did the best they could, but were treated so badly!
And indeed, just reading for fun is important!
Oh I will have to look into those! Very different indeed haha!
Every once in a while I’ll read something a little more serious but since I mostly read for pleasure I do love books that are fun and light. 🙂 But I think a lot of fantasy books can deal with serious topics too!
Yeah that is defintily important! That’s why I mainly just to time, and very slowly haha!
I totally agree – read what makes you feel good, now and forever!
It is important!
I think you are right that we should read whatever we want, especially with the state of the world right now.
It is great to set goals to read nonfiction though. Ironically I’m reading my first memoir that I’ve read in ages, in July. But it is Colin Jost’s memoir so I’m not sure how serious you can consider that lol
Enjoyment is the most important thing!
Hahah, as long as you like it!
I always thought biographies counted as non-fiction! I don’t know what else they would be. And id agree people should read what they want!
Me neither haha, but I thought I should mention it in case someone disagrees haha!
I completely agree. I read based on my mood and what I think I’ll enjoy. But I did make goals at the beginning of the year, one of them being 15% non fiction, but I’ve been quite bad at it and not even close. I might have to just drop that goal
But good luck to you and hope you read some amazing nonfiction
Haha 15% actually sounds like quite a bit! Maybe you don’t manage that goal, but I hope you do find some good ones!
I agree, we should feel free to read whatever we enjoy! I said something along similar lines in my post. 🙂 I don’t really read nonfiction, I find it really hard to get in to! Though I will have a go at reading more nonfiction in the future.
Oh good to hear that we have similar thougts!
Yeah non-fiction can be hard! But there are so many out there, there is probably one you find interesting 🙂
I think you’re right – Read whatever you want!
However I noticed last year that I was reading effectively the same books over and over again with different characters and different worlds, and decided that this year I was going to challenge myself a little more.
I’m still reading books I want to read but there is more of a structure and I’m reading books I would never have picked up otherwise!
I also really like to challenge myself, and find books I never thought I would like!
But the most important thing is to read what you like!
