What is it about?
Elizabeth
Lavenza hasn’t had a proper meal in weeks. Her thin arms are covered with
bruises from her “caregiver,” and she is on the verge of being thrown
into the streets . . . until she is brought to the home of Victor Frankenstein,
an unsmiling, solitary boy who has everything–except a friend.
Victor is her escape from misery. Elizabeth does
everything she can to make herself indispensable–and it works. She is taken in
by the Frankenstein family and rewarded with a warm bed, delicious food, and
dresses of the finest silk. Soon she and Victor are inseparable.
But her new life comes at a price. As the years
pass, Elizabeth’s survival depends on managing Victor’s dangerous temper and
entertaining his every whim, no matter how depraved. Behind her blue eyes and
sweet smile lies the calculating heart of a girl determined to stay alive no
matter the cost . . . as the world she knows is consumed by darkness.

What I thought:
The concept of this book sounded really good, so I decided to listen to this even though I have not loved Kiersten White’s And I darken.
The beginning of this book was a bit confusing, I didn’t see who was who and what their relation were. But after like 2 hours of listening, I saw the relations.
I struggled with the switching between now and the past without any introduction. So sometimes it took me a little while to see what time it was haha.
I really liked that I’ve read the original classic, so that I could see all the similarities 🙂
I enjoyed listening to it, but it was not that special in my opinion, so two thirds into the book it started to get a bit boring, but then there was a plot twist! And it was amazing! It took me by surprise, did not see it coming at all. Enjoyed it, really fitted the story.
My favourite character was Justine, I didn’t feel so much for the other characters, especially the main character, she is a whining a lot in my opinion.
Okay this review is all over the place.. But I would have rated to book lower, if not for the unexpected ending!
Come talk to me!
Do you like retellings of Frankenstein?
I loved this retelling! I think it stayed true to the source material while still bringing a lot of new things to think about. Loved White’s take on Elizabeth. I think Frankenstein retellings are a hard thing to do well though.
I think so too! Especially if you want to stay really close to the original story!
