What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
October “Toby” Daye, a
changeling who is half human and half fae, has been an outsider from birth.
After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the Faerie
world, retreating to a “normal” life. Unfortunately for her, the
Faerie world has other ideas…
The murder of Countess Evening Winterrose pulls Toby back into the fae world. Unable to resist Evening’s dying curse, which binds her to investigate, Toby must resume her former position as knight errant and renew old alliances. As she steps back into fae society, dealing with a cast of characters not entirely good or evil, she realizes that more than her own life will be forfeited if she cannot find Evening’s killer.
I really wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into starting this book haha. I just knew that I love Seanan McGuire’s wayward children series, and that this is a favourite series of one of my best friends. I knew it was some kind of mystery and had paranormal elements. Which actually sound like quite a bit now that I all wrote it out haha. Bit it was still all so vague.
I was really confused in the beginning with the different fae and things, but the story was very intriguing and I really wanted to continue on with this series!
The beginning of this book doesn’t really have an introduction, so you get thrown into the story, which obviously doesn’t help with the confusion.
I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book, but I’m still a bit confused about her relationship with certain people and the different faerie ‘tribes’.
I’m realizing my review so far is just me saying I’m confused haha.
Even though I was confused, I did really liked the different faerie’s and their confusing relations. I also did really enjoy the main character, she was quite complex, and I liked how we got to see a lot of different emotions from her. And that she does ask for help, and not assuming she can do everything herself!
I will definitely continue on in this series, since I really want to learn more from this world. And I’m curious to the mystery that will happen there!
I’m sorry if this review is all over the place, I wrote half of this on vacation, and now three weeks later I’m trying to write it out, but most of my notes didn’t make any sense to me anymore ahah.
