What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
An epic fantasy by Hugo Award–winning author Matt Wallace about a utopian city with a dark secret…and the underdogs who will expose it, or die trying.
They call them Savages. Brutal. Efficient. Expendable.
The empire relies on them. The Savages are the greatest weapon they ever developed. Culled from the streets of their cities, they take the ones no one will miss and throw them, by the thousands, at the empire’s enemies. If they live, they fight again. If they die, there are always more to take their place.
Evie is not a Savage. She’s a warrior with a mission: to find the man she once loved, the man who holds the key to exposing the secret of the Savage Legion and ending the mass conscription of the empire’s poor and wretched.
But to find him, she must become one of them, to be marked in her blood, to fight in their wars, and to find her purpose. Evie will die a Savage if she has to, but not before showing the world who she really is and what the Savage Legion can really do.

My thoughts:
I was quite excited to read this book. The cover looks amazing, and the summary sounds good!
But I struggled.. I really had a hard time reading this..
For the first 50 pages I was just lost (and honestly just the whole time). It really felt as if we were dumped in the middle of the story, without any explanations. And sometimes that works, since the explanation will come on slowly, but I felt like I still needed an explanation after 200 pages!
The summary made it sound as if we would only follow one character, Evie, but we actually follow 3 (or 4). For two of them I can see how they were related, but for the third one I had no clue why I was following her story. And then we also had 2 chapters from a 4th person, but that part I really had no idea why it was there?!
The only character and plot line that was a bit interesting to me was Evie’s, but it was not enough to push myself through the book! Most of the time there was not much happening in all three if the storylines, it was just that in Evie’s story line the most was happening.
The premise of the book did sound good, but I just lacked something that made me want to pick the book back up. I really was dreading picking it back up every time I put it down. And I think that is a good sign that this book is not for me.
Sorry this one didn’t work out, hope your next read is much more engaging!
Thanks!
Sorry this was so disappointing!
yeah.. unfortunately we cannot like every book..!
Nothing worse than getting 50 pages in and still feeling lost. I had something similar happen to me early this year. I was silly enough to read the whole thing, though
Hopefully your future reads are more enjoyable
I don´t mind being confused for a bit, but things should start to make sense at some point haha!
I try to not spend too much time on books I´m not enjoying, since there are many more out there that I will love!
