What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
Beware of the woods and the dark, dank
deep.
He’ll follow you home, and he won’t let you sleep.
Who are the Sawkill Girls?
Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady
and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll
never find.
Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting
but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s
broken—or maybe everyone else is.
Val: the queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged,
ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives, a heart made of
secrets and a mouth full of lies.
Their stories come together on the island of
Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves
crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious
monster at parties and around campfires.
Where girls have been disappearing for decades,
stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight… until now.
My thoughts:
The only other book I have read by Claire Legrand is Furyborn, which I was not a fan off.. But I still wanted to read this one since I heard quite some good things.
I really did not know anything about this one going in. And I quickly learned that this book is very different from Furyborn haah!
When I just started the book I really thought I would enjoy the book, since the plot immediately pulled me in, I really wanted to know everyone’s secrets! I typically like these mystery kinda stories taking place on islands or somewhat secluded cities! But after like 50% of the book I was kinda done with the story, and to be honest I don’t really know why I finished it.
This book is about this legend where girls keep disappearing. And right from the start we already know which family is behind this. I mean we as readers know this, the characters do not, but they already suspect this family. So it was kinda weird that we spend so long figuring this out?
I just felt like this book was way too long, and to me it felt that the characters were pointlessly ‘stupid’ for the sake of the book being longer?!
I think after being halfway through book I didn’t really care for the plot anymore. Which made me skip some parts of the book..
The farther I continued in the book the more I got annoyed by every character.. I didn’t like Zoey and her dad from the start. I really didn’t like how they acted towards each other and to other people.. I did like Marion in the beginning, but since she was acting quite stupid in the middle, I started to get more annoyed by her. And kinda the same story for Val.
What also didn’t help was the voices the narrator was doing, sometimes she spoke very high or tried to make the characters sound scared or things like that. But in my opinion it wasn’t done well, and it annoyed me. So I do think that those voices made me get annoyed by the characters even more.
Since I didn’t really like the plot, wasn’t a fan of the characters, and already didn’t like a previous by Claire Legrand, I think I should decide that this author is not for me.. Unfortunately since the plot of this one did sound interesting!
Awe — that’s a shame that you didn’t enjoy it! The synopsis does actually sound really intriguing, but from what you’ve said, it seems like the author may have faltered in a few parts like pacing and the characters. Great review!
Yes that’s why I really wanted to read it!
Thanks!
I haven’t read any books by this author but I remember seeing mixed reviews for this one before. Sorry this one didn’t work for you, Evelyn! Hoping your next read is more enjoyable.
Thanks!
Bummed you didn’t like this one, but great review. I really enjoyed Sawkill Girls, but I haven’t started Furyborn yet.
Thanks! I’m happy that you did like it!
Shame you didn’t enjoy it! But not all books can win, I’m not so keen on the plot!
