My thoughts:
Before I picked up this book I had read two books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Mexican Gothic and Gods of Jade and Shadow, and loved both! These two books are very different from each other, and I knew this one would be different once again. So I had really no idea what to expect from this one!
But once again, Silvia Moreno-Garcia did not disappoint! And Iโm so excited to pick up more of her works, no matter what the genre is! Just to give an idea, this book is more similar to Gods of Jade and Shadow then Mexican Gothic!
I think I read this book at exactly the right moment, I was getting a bit burned out on all the fantasy I was reading! But I think I would have loved this book at any moment of time! I flew through it, I think I read it in less than 24 hours.
This is a slow-burn romance novel set in a historical setting, a story about selfishness, innocence and in the end true love!
Based on the synopsis and the first couple of chapter I had some expectations of where the story would go. But this all happened in Part one of the book, meaning there was a whole second part to surprise me. We read this book from several POVs, all from important characters of the story, and it was so interesting to see all of there thoughts, and way of thinking. This also meant that we knew more then the characters, and that made seeing them making certain decisions very interesting. They all had their own goals and plans with everything that was happening, and I loved them for that. Some of the characters went quite far to see their goals being accomplished, and I like that in characters!
I really enjoyed the setting of this imagined world with a really tiny touch of magic.
This book is definitely more character driven then plot driven, but still the plot was enjoyable! I really enjoyed seeing the different alliances develop and seeing what direction those took!
As I mentioned, I read this book in less then 24 hours, I just kept wanting to pick it up! Partly because of the story but also because of the amazing writing!
