What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

My thoughts:

I FINALLY read this one! I’m really happy I went with the audiobook option! I think that made the experience more magical! Also I really like the narrator (Jim Dale)!

I read this mainly because many people told me that it is even better than Caraval. But I have to say that I disagree, I liked Caraval better haha, might have to do with the order that I read the books in!

I absolutely loved the atmosphere of this book! And was so magical and whimsical! I also really loved most of the characters, they were all so interesting and weird (in a good way)! Especially the twins!

I loved the competition part of the story, especially because we actually don’t really know how it works, just like the characters. It was nice being in the dark with them.

Basically I really loved this book, except for one thing. The romance.. I really did not care for their romance. And tbh, all the side characters were way more interesting to me. So the relation between them was not the best part of the book to me!

Since the romance was such a big part of the book I took two stars..

But I really loved her writing, so I will probably pick up her upcoming release, the starless sea!

Did you read this? What did you think?

  1. Great review! I read this one years ago and don’t really remember anything about it but I think I liked it? Maybe? IDK I didn’t write a review but gave it 4 stars so who knows lol. I did read it before Caraval though, and I think I will have to wait until there’s more distance before I re-read this one to avoid comparisons.

    1. Yeah I might have made too many comparisons haha. And tbh I’m starting to foget things about this one already..

  2. This is a Gollum book for me – I want to read it and I don’t want to read it in probably equal amounts. It seems to be one of those books that really divides people for some reason and so I’ve never got round to picking it up. One day.Lynn 😀

    1. For me it was just okay haha. I expected to either love it or hate it as well haha!
