I always love making lists! So I’m participating in Top 5 Saturday which is organised by Mandy @Devouring Books.
This week’s topic is intimidating books on my TBR! To me intimidating books are either for long books, high fantasy book or very well loved books! So I tried to make a mix of these books!

- Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson – This book is long, it is so well loved and it is high fantasy haha! I have read book one and two in this series, and am currently rereading them. So I know I love the series but it still intimidates me haah!
- The Black Prism by Brent Weeks – This book sounds amazing, it is on the longer side, and I’ve heard quite mixed reviews. And the mixed reviews are my main reason for this book being intimidating!
- The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixen – I’ve heard amazing things, but I’m afraid the Sci-fi is too difficult for me haha!
- Dune by Frank Herbert – Another big book within the science-fiction books! It sounds very good, but I’m not mentally ready for this one yet haha!
- The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune – Everyone seems to love this one, and it sounds so good and like something I would love. But I’m afraid I won’t..!

Sometimes I’m also intimidated by books that have a lot of hype because I’m scared I won’t like them hah. Great list!
Exactly!
I’d say the most intimidating books on my TBR are The Poppy War and Jade City because of the length of the books as well as the hype!
I totally get you! I have read the poppy war, but have yet to read Jade city! Both are so well loved haha!
This is a great topic! I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea! Dune is definitely intimidating and if scifi isn’t your genre that makes it even harder. But it was more like a fantasy than scifi. There was lots of political drama in a world completely unlike Earth, so maybe that will make it easier. I’m still super intimidated by The Priory of the Orange Tree.
I think when I decided to resd Dune, I should make sure I have lots of time to read at once haha!
The priory is intimidating, but very good!
The whole cosmere is super intimidating! Honestly those books are so long! I’m sure they’re good, though
It is! But it is very worth it!
Most of them are for the same reasons as you! Long books and high fantasy! Some of mine include the Wheel of Time series. I’ve read the first two in the series, but they are such long books, plus it’s such a big series!
I’ve also read the first two, and loved them! But I need breaks in between, snice they are so long haha! And Indeed it will take forever to go through the whole series!
I stopped at book 12 of The Wheel Of Time books because they got so big, now I just stare at them and think, some day….
Ooh but you were already so far haha!
Ahhhh I just read Dune a few weeks ago! It took me a while to read, but it was 100% worth it. 🙂
Ooh that’s so good to hear!
Books over 500 always intimidate me! They are just so big, haha.
They are!
I also put off books I think I’ll love quite often. Recently crosses off The Fifth Season that had been intimidating me and I loved it and Malazan, where I gave up at page 73.
I haven’t really seen anyone happy with the way the lightbringer series ended … so maybe a good one to cross off …
Dune is divisive … I thought it was boring, it’s more like science fantasy than pure sci fi though if that’s what worrying you
I actually had this problem with The Fifth Season, thought I would love it but didn’t..
I keep hearing mixed things about Dune, I think I will try it, since my brother loved it and we have quite a similar taste!
I, too, am scared I won’t like The House in the Cerulean Sea. It was one of my most anticipated books of 2020. I bought it on my kindle but I’m terrified to open it and read it. I’m also really intimidated by Brandon Sanderson! I want to read he’s books but they’re quite lengthy!
Good to hear I’m not the only one haha!
I love Brandon Sanderson, but I understand being intimidated!
