What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
Kazi and Jase have survived, stronger and more in love than ever. Their new life now lies before them―the Ballengers will be outlaws no longer, Tor’s Watch will be a kingdom, and the two of them will meet all challenges side by side, together at last.
But an ominous warning mars their journey back, and in their rush to return to Tor’s Watch, just outside the fortress walls, they are violently attacked and torn apart―and each is thrust into their own new hell.
Unsure whether the other is alive or dead, Kazi and Jase must keep their wits among their greatest enemies and unlikeliest allies. And all the while, Death watches and waits.

I wasn’t a huge fan of book one, but the ending had me interested enough to continue on, and since it is only a duology.. Why not?
This book was, just like book one, quite mediocre to me. The characters just felt quite generic to me, nothing necessarily wrong with them, but there was also nothing special. What I did like is that the relationship gets established in the first book, and continues in this one. No annoying love triangles, or unnecessary drama. At least not within the relationship!
Maybe it is because I forgot some things about the first book, but I was a bit confused with how the world was put together (Also couldn’t see the map, because the library taped to cover on it..). But that confused me a bit in the beginning since they talked about travelling certain places, but I did not know where.
I think my main problem was that I, besides not feeling much for the characters, also did not really care for the plot.. It, again, felt quite generic to me. They are driven away from ‘their’ land, and they have to fight for it to get it back. I just feel like I’ve seen it before a bit too often.
And just did not really make me want to pick up the book, or enjoy it too much..
I know this is a bit of a downer review, to me just was just a very typical YA fantasy. I feel like the Remnant chronicles was better, especially the first book in that trilogy!
I do really like Mary E Pearson’s writing! When I was reading, I read it so quickly! I’m very curious to what ever she will write next!
