What is it about? (Summary from GoodReads)
Sometimes our enemies are also our only allies…
After an explosion destroys his ship, the world believes Prince Merik, Windwitch, is dead. Scarred yet alive, Merik is determined to prove his sister’s treachery. Upon reaching the royal capital, crowded with refugees, he haunts the streets, fighting for the weak—which leads to whispers of a disfigured demigod, the Fury, who brings justice to the oppressed.
When the Bloodwitch Aeduan discovers a bounty on Iseult, he makes sure to be the first to find her—yet in a surprise twist, Iseult offers him a deal. She will return money stolen from him, if he locates Safi. Now they must work together to cross the Witchlands, while constantly wondering, who will betray whom first?
After a surprise attack and shipwreck, Safi and the Empress of Marstok barely escape with their lives. Alone in a land of pirates, every moment balances on a knife’s edge—especially when the pirates’ next move could unleash war upon the Witchlands.
I absolutely love this series!
Susan Dennard’s writing is just amazing! I flew through this book, not only because of the story but definitely also because of the writing! This book is written in multiple POVs, normally I’m not a huge fan of books with more then 2 POVs, but this book has 5 and it was so well done. I was never confused about whose POV I was reading from, since all their ‘voices’ were distinct enough!
Next, the characters are fantastic! I like them all, I care about all of them, I really enjoy all their different relations and I was interested in all their story lines! I don’t know what to say more about them, I just love them!
And the world! I really like all the different kingdoms, and their politics. It is really well described, without it being info dumpy (it helps of course that this is book two!). I hope we will see even more of these kingdoms on the sequel!
My favourite thing about this book is the magic system! I just love the witches, and how all their abilities are different, none of them are exactly the same (as far as I understood). I just love how we are slowly learning more about this!
The only thing I was a little bit sad about is that at no point all the characters were together, which I really hoped would happen. But I know that for the story this was better! But maybe in book 3!
I was approximately 100 pages into this book when I ordered book 3! I’m so excited to pick this one up, hopefully soon! I do want to read sightwitch (book 2.5) first though, I don’t think you have to, but it would be nice to read it in the ‘correct’ order!
