Let’s talk bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by Rukky @Eternity Books and Dani @Literary Lion, here different topics will be discussed.
This weeks topic is ‘How to encourage others to read’. Most of my friends in real life and my family do read, so I do not really need to convince anyone to read haha! So I’m, not really sure if I will be able to answer the question, but I will do my best!
Honestly, non-readers are just missing out on so much, since the bookish world is amazing!
Do you like to encourage other people to read?
I love the feeling of suggesting a book to someone, and they end up loving it! Sometimes I suggest a book to my brother (he is a big reader), and I will get nervous to hear his thoughts haha! Recently I made him read Mistborn, which he thought was mediocre (idiot), but he devoured The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear! So now we’re both impatiently waiting for book three!
But then I did not convince him to read, I convinced him to read a certain book haha!
I’m still trying to convince my old roommate to read, she keeps buying books (some on my recommendation) and not read them.. (I mean that is a bookworm problem haha)

What strategies do you use?
I feel like being very enthusiastic about a book is the best way to convince someone! If someone is very enthusiastically talking to me about a certain movie, I do really want to watch it! So why would it not work for books?!
And otherwise, just push a book in someone’s face until they read it?!?!
How do you get someone who ‘hates’ reading to read?
Hating reading is just bullshit. I feel like there is s book out there for everyone, they just haven’t found the types of books they like yet!
So I guess the best way is to figure out what genre they like?! Idk if someone really doesn’t want to read, I prefer spending my time reading then trying to convince them to read haha?!
Do you find certain genres or types of books work better?
I don’t know how to answer this one, since I do not really try to encourage others to read! But if convincing someone depends on how enthusiast I am, then fantasy should be the easiest ahah!
I totally get feeling nervous after recommending things to people. I always think, what if they don’t like it? What if I FAILED them? It’s so nerve-wracking to give people a book you loved like a little piece of your heart and then wonder if they’ll accept it or not!

Exactly!
My husband doesn’t read a lot but I suggested audiobooks to him and now he reads more than he used to. I think sometimes it’s just finding the right story/subject and the right format and letting people read at their own pace. Also, sometimes I think the whole ‘required reading’ thing in school can ruin the reading experience for some people!
Yeah I think just finding your way will definitely solve out! In both format and genre!
Required reading really sets people off! But there are so many more books or there than what you have to read for school..
I’m always trying to convince others to read. I’ll talk about books I’ve read and ask what types of movies they like (usually gives a hint). Not reading is unfathomable to me.
Yeah comparing books and movies sounds like a good one!
Exactly, how can you not read?! That’s not a thing haha
