Let’s talk bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by Rukky @Eternity Books and Dani @Literary Lion, here different topics will be discussed.
This week’s topic is ‘When are reading breaks a good idea?’
Do you ever take breaks from reading?
No. There are always periods were I read less, but I never fully stop reading. I sometimes do not listen to audiobooks for a while, but I always read something physical every day! Even when it is just a chapter before I go to sleep, it helps my mind calm down hahah!
What causes you to take a reading break and how long are they typically?
The periods were I read less are mainly because I’m burnt out on reading haha, or I’m very busy with other things and just do not have the brain power to read. For example when I was writing my thesis, I was just reading and writing for that the whole day. So when I was done with that for the day I just did not want to continue reading, I preferred to just watch something!
With audiobooks I often take a break when I find myself not enjoying any of them, which makes me not focus and often giving the book a lower rating, even though it is a book I ‘should’ love. Then I know it is time to just listen to some music and try again later!

When would you recommend reading breaks to others?
When you find yourself struggling to pick up a book, when you’re not enjoying your reading time, not enjoying anything you read! Or just when you feel like it!
Do you think reading breaks help you read more in the long run?
Maybe not read more, but I think you would enjoy the books more that you do pick up!
I have to admit, I take HUGE reading breaks. Even though I can read a lot when I really sit down and plow through a few books, I always seem to end up going a couple weeks without turning a page not too long after. I think they can make it a lot easier to enjoy it when you do have the energy and time to return!
I can see that as well! But I love to read every day even if it is just a couple of pages!
I think even having periods where you read less can be an effective break! I’m always pushing myself to stay on a certain pace I won’t even let myself have that some days.

I totally know that feeling! I’m trying to tell myself that I do not have to read a certain page count every day!
I don’t take reading breaks in the typical sense, I might slow down or change the genera or picks up a new book. If by some change I don’t read for a few days, it usually isn’t because I don’t want to, but because I have a ton of other stuff I need to do. But, I won’t say I will never take a break from reading in the future. If I need it I will take one.
Great post!
For me it is also more like slowing down then actually stopping with reading!
I definitely remember struggling to find time to read during grad school! Great post!
Yeah sometimes I was just too busy with other things!
This was interesting 🙂 I am always reading something; I dont think there has been a day when I haven’t read for a few years now, even if it’s only a chapter or 2. Books keep me sane haha
Same for me haha!
I have definitely gone on reading breaks before but not for a long time. Usually I’m reading *something* these days! I think a long time ago I’d sometimes go a couple months between books!
Oh wow! That´s indeed quite a time! I´m always reading somthing physcal but sometimes just a bit slower!
I definitely agree it’s time to put down the book if you’re hating it (or liking it less) just because you’re trying to force yourself to read when you don’t want to.
No shame in walking away from reading for a few days!
No point in reading a book you don´t like!
This is a fun post! I don’t take reading breaks at all. But I’m impatient when it comes to reading and dnf books quite a lot so I fully enjoy whatever I’m reading.
Dnf´ing really helps with not having to take breaks!
