What is it about?
Mare is determined to fight for the rights of the reds and the newbloods and overthrow the kingdom of Norta. To do this she has to start with taking Maven’s crown. Since she can’t fight this battle alone she has to work together with the one who broke her heart. Together with the Scarlet guard she works alongside Cal and his Silver allies. While at the same time Maven will stop at nothing to get Mare for himself again, even if he has to ruin everything on his way.
War is coming, but who is working with who?
What I thought:
Since this is a conclusion to a series, I expected a big battle.. And this book definitely delivered!
There were a lot of battles, lots of scheming, lots of betraying and that’s what I really love in these kinds of books, nothing needs to be clear from the beginning, trust no-one! In regards to the scheming, reading from multiple perspectives was really nice, it made you see what all the different ‘teams’ were thinking and planning.
You can really notice that the writing of Victoria Aveyard has improved over this series, and definitely in a good way!
I do have to say, I do not feel as connected to this series as when it started. I just do not care so much anymore for the characters. I did like Evangeline more than I had expected, also I will always like Maven!
Also this really was a book that needed a recap in the beginning! You just got thrown into the story directly from page 1, and the book kept referencing to things that happened before, but I’m sorry I don’t remember what exactly I read a year ago…
Extra points: covers of these series are on point!
If you want a really beautiful series on your shelves, seriously these covers are worth it!
Also for someone who really likes the scheming and the planning of war, and rebellions! Yes I know we have seen the one group that is ‘better’ and the group that is ‘not good’ and the ‘not good’ group standing up for themselves. But it is definitely WORTH it! It is a really interesting story!
